the familiar and almost ritualized act of looking through old family photographs. While these images often shape our personal narratives, summoning or sometimes creating memories and versions of our personal truths, this instance brought into high relief the malleability of such memories. I discovered a distorted past, rather than a patina of nostalgia, while looking through the lens of the present. Thus began a process of deconstructing my history, my memories, and the essence of the photographs themselves. I created the work without Photoshop and instead used a flatbed scanner. The distortions revealed themselves by my making slight movements while scanning, subverting the reproductive quality of both the camera and the scanner. The imperfect and organic capabilities of the technology played a critical role in the work. The images were literally reshaped, as the truth of my memories and the truth of the photographs were being reshaped in my mind. The byproducts of this process are images that blur the line between fact and fiction while speaking to the fragmented realities and multiple truths that make up our lives. There is no one truth, as it is all up for manipulation, whether that be psychological, emotional, technical or formal. An object's use can forever alter its significance, and is sometimes one of few physical residues of an abstract and fleeting moment.
